“She Walks in Beauty” by Siri Mitchell *Review

Sarah Brooks

She Walks in BeautyPride and Prejudice meets the turn-of-the-century, New York City social scene. Seventeen-year-old Clara Carter is thrust into the social season with one goal in mind: capture a wealthy suitor, whatever the cost. Aided by her widowed Aunt, Clara is expected to learn and abide by hundreds of rules of etiquette and comportment. Will she accomplish her mission and restore her family’s honor?

I have always been fascinated by the glamor and intrigue of the upper class, probably because I’m more prone to wear sweatpants than to wear diamonds and ball gowns.  I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read it at every opportunity – even forsaking the coveted afternoon nap so that I could further delve into this exciting world (you know a book has to be good if you’re willing to do that).

Sometimes Christian historical fiction can be overly sappy or romantic, but that’s not the case with this book. I felt that Mitchell did an excellent job of keeping me interested in the story. I loved watching Clara transform from an insecure girl to a confident woman. I felt that the characters where interesting and the story intriguing.

Add this book to your summer reading list.
